The second season of the Pro Wrestling League has hit a roadblock. This after the United World Wrestling (UWW) – the governing body of the sport – sent an e-mail to all its 177 affiliates, including India, that any country whose wrestler(s) participate in the league will face a sanction. But the Wrestling Federation of India (WFI) believes that the issue will be sorted out. WFI also received the same letter from UWW but they say it is a question of miscommunication.
“Yes we also received the e-mail from UWW but there is nothing to worry about. We had to send the PWL calendar to UWW before Monday. We sent it today (Tuesday). We sent out dates today, after they had sent the warning to everyone. We will sort it now,” Vinod Tomar, Secretary General of WFI, said.
PWL is in its second season and is scheduled to begin December 15, 2016 and run until January 14, 2017. Last week, ProSportify, the league owners, and WFI had jointly announced the second season.
But in the e-mail sent by Secretary General of UWW, Michel Dusson, it is mentioned that second season of PWL will be held from December 15 to January 15. It further warned the countries that they could face a sanction if they participate in this event.
A copy of the e-mail letter is with The Indian Express.
“We are informed that India will organise the second edition of the Pro Wrestling League from the 15th of December 2016 to 15th of January 2017. We kindly inform you that this competition is not on United World Wrestling calendar and therefore not a sanctioned event,” the e-mail said.
“We would like to warn you that if you participate at this competition, you might be sanctioned by the United World Wrestling,” it added.
The organisers of PWL have set November 18 as the date for the auction. Many international players, including Olympic champion from Canada Erica Weibe and Olympic medallist Sofia Mattsson of Sweden and Mariya Stadnik of Azerbaijan had sent their names to the auction.
