NEW DELHI: In a sure sign that the Congress party plans to latch itself on firmly to the OROP issue, party chief Sonia Gandhi's son-in-law Robert Vadra, too, today put in his two cents on the suicide of an ex-serviceman+ , allegedly over a delay in receiving his pension.

In a Facebook post that didn't mention OROP once but was all about it, Vadra said it is time the government does the "real thing" for soldiers. He was referring to the timely and correct implementation of the One Rank One Pension scheme for retired servicemen.

"We really need to care for our soldiers, who unconditionally keep us safe, at all times. Let's not only talk jargons. Let government do the real thing for our soldiers," Vadra said on his Facebook page.

Subedar Ram Kishen Grewal, the former serviceman, claimed he had not got the pension hikes he was due under the 6th and the 7th pay commission, and under OROP, despite having served in uniform for 30 years and nine months. Grewal made this claim in a letter addressed to defence minister Manohar Parrikar on October 31, a day before he consumed poison on Tuesday.

Yesterday, Grewal's suicide became an issue that was taken over by the Congress party and the Aam Aadmi Party. Congress leader Rahul Gandhi and AAP leader Manish Sisodia both went to meet family members of Grewal's but were not allowed to enter the hospital where his body lay. The two leaders were also briefly detained in jail.

In all the brouhaha, police even allegedly detained family members of Grewal's. Vadra said in his post it's "shameful" this happened and demanded an investigation into why family was put in such a situation.
"Saddened to learn of the suicide of ex-serviceman Ram Kishen Grewal. Being so desperate to end his life, and further the family being detained by authorities, and not being able to complete the last rights, really needs to be probed," Vadra said on his Facebook page.
