The
Embassy of Republic of Korea with Yonsei University, Korea and Observer
Research Foundation (ORF) co-organized ‘Public Diplomacy dialogue
between Korea and India’ at the ORF Conference Hall. The theme was
“Development of peace and Prosperity for Korea-India Strategic
Partnership.” Dignitaries present at the conference were the Ambassador
of the Republic of Korea to India H.E. SHIN Bongkil, Deputy Minister
& Ambassador of Public Diplomacy of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs
of the Republic of Korea H.E. Enna PARK, Chairman of ORF Dr. Sunjoy
Joshi and Director of Institute of East and West Studies Yonsei
University (IEWS), Dr. Young Sukh PAK.

Enna PARK emphasized the necessity of strong collaboration between
India and Korea. Both the nations share a strong historical
relationship. Economic relation is also growing day by day. She believes
that there is a need of emotional connect between the two countries and
also cooperation in terms of security, peace and prosperity.
Under
the Make In India initiatives by Narendra Modi make in India ease of
doing business. Foreign companies have fair access to the market and we
want to see less regulation and we wish to have favorable environment.
We have 700 Korean Companies in India. We have many opportunities as
Indian market being 2nd largest economy and even
in terms of population, Indians are very much advanced in basic
science. The country is quite appealing. We are working on the policies,
we are slow but on right track. She further talked about growing
relationship of North Korea and South Korea, how the recent talks have
given room to peace at the Korean Peninsula.
H.E. SHIN Bongkil, Ambassador of the Republic of Korea to India said “Public diplomacy is about connecting and engaging the minds to the people of Korea and India. Owing to age old relationship of Korea and India, he quoted Prime Minister Modi saying “10% of Koreans are relatives of India.”
Dr.
Sunjoy Joshi mentioned the need to expand in terms of infrastructure
and strengthen maritime security. He also pointed out the growing
prominence of South Korean brands in India whether in automobile sector
or technology.
The
first session was on the role and contribution of the two countries for
regional order. ORF member Dr. K.V. Kesavan talked about building and
maintaining the strategic partnership of India and South Korea. There
was extensive discussion on the recent summit between Kim Jong-Un and
Donald Trump. Focusing on the Indo-Korea relations he emphasized the
need to contribute in each other’s countries.
