Vidya Balan’s Begum Jaan is getting mixed responses from fans and critics. The Srijit Mukherji directorial is a Hindi remake of Bengali film Rajkahini. The film explores the fight of a group of sex workers when they are asked to leave their house after India-Pakistan partition.

Begum Jaan has collected around Rs 7.44 crore in two days, reported Bollywood Hungama. The film didn’t show growth on the second day. Begum Jaan collected Rs 3.50 crore on Saturday. Earlier, the film got an average opening on the first day, with a collection of Rs 3.94 crore. Trade analyst Taran Adarsh confirmed the same and tweeted, “Begum Jaan biz needs to multiply on Sat + Sun to come up with a decent weekend total… Fri ₹ 3.94 cr. India biz. #BegumJaan had a slow start… Evening shows better… #Furious8 wave + huge start of Punjabi film #ManjeBistre in North made a dent.”Vidya Balan in past has given some box office hits like The Dirty Picture and Kahaani. During past few months, there has been a flurry of films with prominent female characters. Rangoon (Kangana Ranaut), Naam Shabana (Taapsee Pannu) and Phillauri (Anushka Sharma) are some recent examples where female actors have got some meaty roles.

Vidya’s film has however failed to surpass the opening day collection of the three recent movies. Naam Shabana, Phillauri and Rangoon collected Rs 5.12 crore, Rs 4.02 crore and Rs 6.07 crore respectively on an opening day. In comparison, Begum Jaan collected Rs 3.94 crore. The film is also facing some tough competition from Hollywood film Fast and Furious 8 starring Vin Diesel and Dwayne Johnson. The film has collected Rs 38.60 crore. Taran Adarsh confirmed the same and tweeted, “#Furious8 Wed previews 8.50 cr, Thu 14 cr, Fri 16.10 cr. Total: ₹ 38.60 cr [note: Gross BO]. India biz.”

Begum Jaan is expected to show growth on Saturday and Sunday.

Opening Day Collections:

Naam Shabana: Rs 5.12 crore
Phillauri: Rs 4.02 crore
Rangoon: Rs 6.07 crore
Commando 2 starring Vidyut Jammwal comes after four years of its prequel, Commando. The film has collected Rs 4.65 crore, according to a report in Bollywood Hungama. Commando 2 has done better than it’s prequel – Commando that had collected Rs 3.69 crore on its opening day. The film was a solo Bollywood release this weekend that seemed to have benefited Commando 2.

Like the first instalment Commando, its USP is high-octane action sequences by Vidyut. Like other action films including Ghayal Once Again, Force 2 and Rocky Handsome, this film was expected to do decent business on opening day. Here’s how much the first-day collection of recent actioners have been: Ghayal Once Again – Rs 7.2 cr, Force 2 – Rs 6.05 cr, Rocky Handsome – Rs 5.39 cr and Force – Rs 5 cr.

The film is directed by well-known comic actor Deven Bhojani and produced by Vipul Shah. Besides being an action film, Commando 2 also explores issues like demonetisation and black money. The film also stars Esha Gupta, Adah Sharma and Shefali Shah in important roles.Vidyut during an interview with indianexpress.com insists that action in Commando 2 is better than the first iteration. Director Deven Bhojani couldn’t agree more.”Vidyut got injured on the third day of the shoot. He got a ligament tear and was hospitalised. We thought of wrapping the shoot but Vidyut said, ‘give me a couple of days and let’s keep continuing shooting,” said Deven.

When asked if he is under pressure to deliver a Rs 100-crore hit, Vidyut said, “I am an actor. It’s a director and producer’s problem. I am hired to do a job and I did it well. Now, if the film doesn’t do well, it’s not in my destiny. But I have done my job well.”

Producer Vipul Shah also spoke about numbers, “There is a public perception and there is the reality. Film business like any other is decided by returns on investment. We are living in perception in India. If we print a big number, then there is a perception that the film is hit. There are many movies that have declared Rs 100-crore business but have actually lost money. Numbers printed on newspapers can be right, but that doesn’t mean movies are profitable. If a film is made at a cost of Rs 120 crore and makes Rs 100 crore, it’s not profitable. On the other hand, if my film collects Rs 80 crore and is made on a budget of Rs 20 crore, then it’s a better hit.”

When asked if footfalls are falling in theatres and movies are not making money, Vipul said, “If you make a bad movie, you can’t expect people to watch them. Dangal has recently broken all the record. It released in the last month of demonetisation when people were struggling for cash, still, Dangal went ahead and made Rs 400. How is it possible if people are not interested in watching movies? We must make better films, people will come. People want to watch films.”

Asked if Vidyut considers Tiger Shroff as a competition, the actor said, “My competition is with a divine sun. It’s been 30 years since the time I have been competing with it. I wake up before the sun rises. If you are competing with the divine, you don’t worry about others. I have no competition and I don’t believe that I am competition to anybody.”
Jimmy Kimmel returned to the stage Monday night with his own perspective of what happened during the disastrous Best Picture presentation at the Oscars.

“Except for the end it was a lot of fun. It went very well. We were chugging along and then all of a sudden out of nowhere it turned into one of those Maury Povich paternity test shows. It was the weirdest TV finale since ‘Lost,’” the comedian said on “Jimmy Kimmel Live!”

“You know it’s a strange night when the word ‘envelope’ is trending on Twitter.”

Faye Dunaway announced “La La Land” as the Best Picture winner after Warren Beatty passed the card to Except halfway through acceptance speeches, producer Jordan Horowitz announced that “Moonlight” had actually won.

“I’m now sitting in the audience, watching these speeches. The plan is for me to end the show from the audience, in a seat next to Matt Damon,” Kimmel said Monday night.her during the final category of the nigh“We’re sitting there and we notice some commotion and Matt says ‘I think I heard a stagehand say they got the winner wrong.’ So we’re sitting there and we figure the host will go on stage and clear this up and then I remember, ‘oh, I’m the host.’ So, I guess no one else is going to go.”

Kimmel said his first instinct was to tell Horowitz to “take that Oscar and get out,” but instead the “La La Land” cast stayed on stage as the “Moonlight” cast joined the madness.t.“Now there’s mass confusion. The audience is confused, the people standing around me are confused, I assume everyone at home is confused. And I’m probably supposed to do something because no one’s doing anything,” Kimmel said.

“Now I see Denzel Washington in the front row trying to get my attention; he’s gesturing and he’s pointing. I don’t know what he’s pointing, but he says ‘Barry.’ Eventually I figure out that Barry Jenkins, the director of ‘Moonlight,’ is standing beside me and Denzel wants me to get him to the microphone to make a speech, which, you know, makes sense. Thank God Denzel was there to make sense.”

And despite speculation that the whole mess was a gag, Kimmel denied the rumors.“If I had pulled a prank, by the way, I wouldn’t have just had the wrong winner’s on the envelope. When they opened it, there would have been like a Bed, Bath and Beyond coupon. It was not a prank.”

Backstage, Beatty showed Kimmel the card while Stone told reporters that she’d held onto her cards.

“Just to make it more confusing,” Kimmel joked.

At that point, Dunaway had already left the area to avoid the scuffle: “Clyde threw Bonnie under the bus.”

“It wasn’t Warren Beatty’s fault. And Faye Dunaway made quite a getaway. She got the hell out of there,” Kimmel said.“She read the wrong name and she split. She wanted no part of it.”

In the 24 hours after the Oscars upset, PricewaterhouseCoopers accountant Brian Cullinan took most of the blame after he “mistakenly handed the back-up envelope for Actress in a Leading Role instead of the envelope for Best Picture to presenters Warren Beatty and Faye Dunaway,” PricewaterhouseCoopers said in a statement to the Daily News.“Once the error occurred, protocols for correcting it were not followed through quickly enough by Mr. Cullinan or his partner.”

The Academy issued a similar statement, apologizing for the mishap.

“We apologize to the entire cast and crew of La La Land and Moonlight whose experience was profoundly altered by this error. We salute the tremendous grace they displayed under the circumstances. To all involved — including our presenters Warren Beatty and Faye Dunaway, the filmmakers, and our fans watching worldwide — we apologize,” the organization said.

Mumbai:  Aamir Khan is known to experiment with his looks and physique for his roles, which he often chooses with great scrutiny.
The actor had accumulated kilograms aplenty for his most recent blockbuster, 'Dangal,' receiving terrific critical acclaim.
Aamir will next be seen in a quirky extended cameo, in his home production, 'Secret Superstar'. However, the actor had been spending months to perfect the look of his highly anticipated Vijay Krishna Acharya directorial, 'Thugs of Hindostan,' where he will be seen alongside Bollywood legend Amitabh Bachchan for the very first time.
And now, his first look from the film is out, and Aamir is borderline unrecognisable.

Like many Americans, “Game of Thrones” author George R.R. Martin has expressed his disappointment over Donald Trump’s win in the U.S. presidential elections.

Martin took to his website to talk about the bleak outlook following Hillary Clinton’s defeat.

“There are really no words for how I feel this morning. America has spoken. I really thought we were better than this. Guess not,” the 68-year-old author wrote in a post.

“Trump was the least qualified candidate ever nominated by a major party for the presidency. Come January, he will become the worst president in American history, and a dangerously unstable player on the world stage,” he said.

Martin said the problems are going to get worse in Trump’s presidency.

“And the decimated Democrats, a minority in both House and Senate, do not have the power to hinder him. Over the next four years, our problems are going to get much, much worse.

“Winter is coming. I told you so,” he concluded.

Coincidentally, the Winter is indeed coming in the Season 7 of “Game of Thrones” which is set to premiere on Star World Premiere HD in 2017.

A bare-chested trekker is lying on top of a mountain. The white snow in the background makes us notice his prominent tattoos and still warm pipe. Panoramic aerial shots give us a tour of the beautiful place, and a question rears its head: Why didn’t they make it in 3D?

Some college students join Shivaay (Ajay Devgn) for a mountaineering mission. Olga (Erika Kaar), a Bulgarian studying at the Delhi University, is one of them. There is a spontaneous spark between Olga and Shivaay. They fall in love before the sun sets. Unfortunately, this isn’t enough to hold Olga back in India.

But, our heroes know how to preserve love for centuries. And thus after years, Shivaay decides to visit Bulgaria. Gaura (Abigail Eames), an eight-year-old girl, is accompanying him. Olga hadn’t left only Shivaay wandering in the mountains.

The new country turns out to be more mysterious than what the father-daughter duo expected. And they might not be able to untangle the web of lies and deceit coming their way.

Aseem Bajaj’s camera guides us through tunnels and snow-covered hills. With a little help from the CGI team, he successfully creates an environment where the vast canvas makes the audience anxious. Devgn escalates the excitement with a well-choreographed opening action sequence that sees him doing bungee-jumping, gliding and parachuting. The rising crescendo in the background makes him appear flamboyant, tough, skilled and intimidating.

It is also the moment when Devgn gets carried away. He doesn’t want to let go the initial momentum and keeps stretching the sequence. As a result, the film takes time in arriving to the actual plot.

After beating around the bush for many minutes, Devgn finally gathers the courage to come out of the mountains. He has already set a tone for the narrative by now. The film moves to a new location, but it needs to maintain the same attitude.

Shivaay is primarily conceived as an action film. Shiva — the destroyer is dominant than Shiva — the protector. References through names and symbols make it obvious. Plus, Devgn is really good in action sequences.

If the opening sequence brings out his athleticism, the fist-fighting in Bulgaria presents him as a vulnerable yet competitive guy.

You can occasionally be reminded of Vin Diesel’s xXx, Vertical Limit or The Dark Knight Rises, but proceedings mostly remain under Devgn’s control except when he tries to make space for emotional unfolding.

Actually, it’s such an action-dominated film that the efforts to put emotional breathers in between seem futile. After all, we all know where we are going to bump into.

Obvious things take till eternity to happen. The characters sledgehammer us with useless information. Actors like Girish Karnad and Saurabh Shukla mouth dialogues that have no or least connection with the central theme. Accommodating everyone pushes the length of the film to 173 minutes.

What begins as a thrilling adventure turns into a self-indulgent experiment. From shaky camera to mafia to corrupt policemen, everything boils down to Devgn’s uncontrollable urge to raze each standing thing to the ground.

When you think it’s about to touch a logical end, another twist comes into sight. It keeps dragging in search of an end.

The ingredients are there, but loose ends restrict Shivaay from becoming a smooth ride.

Devgn’s stunts are a treat to watch, but that’s about it. Shivaay treks trough high altitudes, but the film keeps waiting for him to return to the valley with a string attached to his legs.

Paul Beatty was on Tuesday named as the first American to win the prestigious Man Booker fiction prize, for "The Sellout", a biting satire on race relations in the United States.

The narrator of "The Sellout", an African-American called "Bonbon" tries to put his Californian town back on the map, from which it has been officially removed, by re-introducing slavery and segregation in its high school.

The 289-page novel begins with "Bonbon" facing a hearing in the Supreme Court, looking back over the events that led up to that point.

The language is uncompromising and may offend some readers. So might some of the content - one old black film actor asks to become Bonbon's slave - as Beatty lampoons racial stereotypes. The protagonist's father is unjustly shot by police.

"This is a hard book. It was hard for me to write, it's hard to read," said a tearful Beatty immediately after winning the award at a ceremony at London's historic Guildhall.

"For me, it's just really gratifying that something that's important to me is also important for other people," he later told a news conference.

Chair of the five judges for the 50,000 pound ($60,900) prize Amanda Foreman said "The Sellout" had been a unanimous choice, reached after a meeting lasting some four hours.

"It plunges into the heart of contemporary American society with absolutely savage wit of the kind I haven't seen since Swift or Twain," she said.

"It manages to eviscerate every social nuance, every sacred cow, while making us laugh and also making us wince ... It is really a novel for our times."

Asked about the language, Foreman said, "Paul Beatty has said being offended is not an emotion. That's his answer to the reader," Foreman said.

"The Sellout" is 54-year-old Beatty's fourth novel. He has also edited an anthology of African-American humour.

It was publisher Oneworld's second Man Booker victory after winning the 2015 prize for "A Brief History of Seven Killings" by Jamaican Marlon James.

Beatty said he would not have written the book had his partner not persuaded him to apply for a grant that allowed him time to complete the book.

"I don't like writing," he said. "I'm a perfectionist in some ways and I get easily disgruntled and discouraged with what I'm doing."

Apart from the 50,000 pound prize, each of the six shortlisted authors wins 2,500 pounds ($3,045) winning the Man Booker can have a major impact on a writer's sales and readership. James told Reuters recently that winning the prize can have a "seismic" impact.

In its 48-year history, the prize has gone to authors including Salman Rushdie, Hilary Mantel and Margaret Atwood. Three years ago the rules were changed to cover any novel written in English, regardless of the writer's nationality, and published in Britain. Previously it was confined largely to authors from the Commonwealth.

Since January, the judges have read 155 novels before whittling the pile down to a "longlist" of 13 then a shortlist of six.

This year's shortlist comprised works by two Britons, a Briton born in Canada, a Canadian and two Americans.

Deborah Levy, whose "Hot Milk" was in the final six this year, has been on the shortlist before, while Ottessa Moshfegh's "Eileen" was her debut novel.

NEW DELHI: Information and Broadcasting Minister M Venkaiah Naidu today termed as "wrong" the MNS demand of Rs. 5 crore from film director Karan Johar for resolving the controversy over his movie 'Ae Dil Hai Mushkil' (ADHM) and said the government had nothing to do with it.
"That was a wrong proposal. We don't agree with their proposal. The Maharashtra Chief Minister has also clarified that he was not a part of the proposal that was made by some other party...," Mr Naidu said.

Stressing that the matter was between "some party" and the "producer", he said the government does not "subscribe to that thinking at all and has no role to play".

The minister was reacting to Raj Thackeray-led MNS asking Mr Johar to donate Rs. 5 crore to the army for casting a Pakistani actor in his movie ADHM.

He also underscored that it was the state government's duty to provide security as law and order was a state subject.

Maharashtra Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis has taken the initiative to amicably resolve the problem through discussion, he added.

The government wants good relations with all including the neighbours but the "neighbour too has to behave like a good neighbour," he said while hitting out at Pakistan without naming it.

"Aiding, abetting, funding and training terrorists is not acceptable at all. They want to subvert the country. Why are you doing this? This will be ruinous for you also. Let us join together...why this kind of activity? Terrorism is the enemy of humanity," Mr Naidu said.
Bollywood superstar Shah Rukh Khan was again "detained" at an United States airport, the third time in seven years that he has been stopped by US immigration officials at the country's airports, with the actor expressing disappointment on social media.

"I fully understand & respect security with the way the world is, but to be detained at US immigration every damn time really really sucks," (sic) the actor tweeted after being detained at the Los Angeles airport.

"The brighter side is while waiting caught some really nice Pokemons," the 50-year-old actor said in another tweet referring to the widely popular mobile game.

Assistant Secretary of State for South and Central Asia in the US Department of State Nisha Desai Biswal has apologised for "hassle" Khan faced at the airport.

"Sorry for the hassle at the airport, @iamsrk -- even American diplomats get pulled for extra screening," Biswal tweeted.

This was not the first instance that Khan was detained at an American airport by immigration officials.

In April 2012, Khan was detained at the White Plains airport near New York for over two hours by immigration officials.

Khan was in the US to visit Yale University and was accompanied by Nita Ambani, wife of Reliance Industries Chairman Mukesh Ambani. He was understood to have been travelling in a private plane.

Following the incident, sources had then said that while Ambani and the rest of their group was cleared immediately, Khan was stopped and was given immigration clearance only after about two hours.

Yale University officials had to contact and speak with officials at the Department of Homeland Security and Department of US Immigration and Customs in Washington when they were informed that Khan was held up at the airport.

After the incident in New York, Khan had said, "Whenever I start feeling too arrogant about myself I always take a trip to America. The immigration guys kicked the star out of stardom," Khan had said to the Yale students.

In 2009, Khan was detained at the Newark Airport in New Jersey for nearly two hours.

Following the incident, Khan had sought to downplay the "unfortunate procedure" at Newark airport and had said that he would not demand an apology.

Filmmaker Karan Johar has shared that the second installment of SS Rajamouli's magnum opusBaahubali will hit the screens in April next year.

Karan, who distributed the Hindi version of the first part, took to Twitter on Friday to announce the release date.

"Baahubali – The Conclusion releases on the 28th of April 2017," Karan tweeted.

Director Rohit Dhawan’s latest film, Dishoom, out in the UAE now, has been banned in Pakistan, and its lead actor, Varun Dhawan, is really upset about it.

Dhawan, who plays a rookie police officer named Junaid Ansari in the film, tweeted on Saturday: “Really upset that Dishoom is banned in Pakistan. I don’t think the film eventually shows any country in a bad light. It’s a wrong decision.”

Dishoom centres around India’s top batsman who goes missing in the Middle East and two police officials from either side of the Arabian Sea team up for a 36-hour manhunt.

The film also stars John Abraham and Jacqueline Fernandez.
