Hardik Pandya put on a stunning display of hard-hitting as he blasted his way to his maiden Test ton during the second day of the third Test against Sri Lanka at Pallekele on Sunday.

Pandya bludgeoned a 96-ball 108 to help India put on 487 in the first innings of the last match of the series against the Islanders. In doing so, Pandya has set new milestone for India in the longest format of the game.

Pandya reached his century off just 86 deliveries and by doing so, he became the fourth fastest Indian (tied with Kapil Dev) to score a ton in Test cricket. The all-rounder is behind only to the likes of Mohammad Azharuddin (74 balls), Kapil Dev (74 balls), Virender Sehwag (78 balls) and Shikhar Dhawan (85 balls).

During the course of his stunning innings, Pandya stunned a hapless Lanka bowling attack by smashing seven huge sixes. By doing so, he now stands second in the list of most number of sixes hit by an Indian in a Test innings. Only, Navjot Singh Sidhu (8 sixes) is ahead of Pandya now in this particular list.

Also, Pandya hit 26 runs off one Pushpakumara over and now holds the India record of most number of runs scored in an over in Test. Overall, only Brian Lara (28), Trevor Bailey (28) and Shahid Afridi (27) are ahead of him now. At the start of the 116th over of the innings, India's score read 430/9 but after the six balls were bowled, Pandya had taken the visitors' total to 456/9. 4,4,6,6,6,0 — this is how Pandya bludgeoned runs in this particular over.

He also now stands at 13th position in the list of highest individual score by an Indian while batting at eighth or lower in the batting order
BENGALURU: Match referee Chris Broad may have termed the Pune pitch 'poor' in his report to the ICC but players from both teams refused to dwell on the demons in the strip on which Australia wrapped up the opening encounter in under three days. Instead, they opted to answer queries about the pitch 'sportingly'.Indian opener Murali Vijay, who scored 10 and 2 in Pune, backed the dry turner, stating it wasn't a poor wicket. "Going into a match, I don't see the wicket. I go with an open mindset and if the wicket does something extra I try to adapt to it. I don't think it was a poor wicket. It was much more challenging. As cricketers, we need to play on such wickets than playing on flat tracks or seaming wickets. It tests your ability and I take it that way. Overall it was a good game of cricket. We should have done better in the first innings and the match could have gone longer. But it didn't happen," said Vijay adding that the M Chinnaswamy stadium pitch looked good.

Seasoned Australian opener David Warner, who contributed 48 runs to his team's total, conceded it was not a typical wicket but was quick to add that it's all part of the game.

"It's up to the ICC and match referees to deal with that. There have been wickets around the world that have been not too similar to what was produced but we were talking about it before. You've got green tops, you've got spinning wickets, you've got ones that sort of explode and take chunks out from Day One. But at the end of the day we've just have to adapt to the conditions and that (pitch) gets dealt with afterwards," he pointed out.

The ICC chief executive committee had decided to punish venues with below-par pitches and BCCI has 14 days to respond to the international body.

Zimbabwe seem to have a monopoly of this, for they have four entries in 10 lowest totals in ODI cricket. Here is the list of 10 lowest totals in the history of ODIs.After putting up brave performances in the previous two ODIs of the five-match series against Afghanistan and coming from behind to level the contest, Zimbabwe were considered as favourites walking into the series decider on Sunday at Harare. But they succumbed to the joint seventh-lowest total in ODI history to fold up for a paltry 54 and lose the match by a big margin of 106 runs by Duckworth-Lewis (D-L) Method. Batting first, Afghanistan had managed to score 253 for 9 in their 50 overs. However, due to rain interruption in the second half, the match was reduced to 22 overs. Zimbabwe’s reduced target was 161.

But Zimbabwe could manage a meagre 54, thus losing the match embarrassingly as well as series in front of home crowds. This is the joint seventh-lowest total in the history of ODIs. It is also Zimbabwe’s fourth-lowest total in ODIs. Their lowest total in ODIs is 35 against Sri Lanka at the same venue in 2004, which is also the lowest ever total by a team in ODIs. Their second-lowest total (38) in ODIs is against the same side, Sri Lanka in 2001. Zimbabwe’s third-lowest total in ODIs (44) came in 2009 against Bangladesh at Chittagong. Leading Test-playing nations Australia, England, South Africa and New Zealand do not find mention in the list of top-10 lowest totals in ODIs. However, India, Pakistan and Sri Lanka, however, all have entries, as do West Indies. While Sri Lanka and Pakistan have identical lowest ODI totals (43), India and West Indies do the same (54).he history of ODIs:

MUMBAI: Australian captain Steve Smith raised the temperature Tuesday ahead of the first Test against India, calling on his players to "go for it" with the verbal volleys and on-field aggression.

India-Australia series are notoriously feisty affairs -- the 2008 contest Down Under was almost called off following the infamous "Monkeygate" incident as animosity between the old foes threatened to boil over.

There was then further bad blood during India's Test and one-day series in Australia prior to the 2015 World Cup when heated on-field exchanges led to several players being penalised.

But ace batsman Smith urged his players to do whatever it takes to win the four-Test series, which starts on February 23 in Pune.

IPL Auction 2017: Eoin Morgan, Ishant Sharma, Cheteshwar Pujara and Angelo Mathews will all feature in the auction pool.
A total of 351 players, including 122 internationals, will go under the hammer in the IPL Auction 2017 that will take place in Bangalore on February 20. The highlight of this list is the inclusion of six players from Associate nations including five Afghanistan players and one from the UAE. The list also comprises of 23 Indian internationals with only Sudeep Tyagi missing the bus. Although the list of 351 players has been announced, the complete list of players is yet to be announced.

India's most successful bowler of all time takes over as coach of the national team, determined to stay away from the spotlight and not to steal his players' thunder.Live Cricket Score, India vs Bangladesh: After a superb show in the first two days of the one-off Test by the batsmen, Indian bowlers continued the dominant display on the third day by taking early wickets of Bangladesh. The visitors made a disastrous start losing Tamim Iqbal to a run-out in the third over of the day. Friday's survivor Mominul Haque could not stay for long as Umesh Yadav dismissed him for 12. Shakib and Mahmudullah, who looked clueless initially, started counter-attacking which worked for them and gave some hope of pride to the visitors. However, Mahmudullah too survived only for 28 runs.

MUMBAI: In movies, lead actors, despite having great lines or scenes written for them, depend on their co-actors' pauses or reactions or cues to elevate a scene or situation to the next level. The same can be said about sport.

"Batting down the order is one of the toughest things to do. You don't get a (ready-made) player who's complete, who bats at No.5, 6 or 7, all the time."

Skipper MS Dhoni chose his words carefully while addressing the media as he analysed India's 19-run defeat to New Zealand to leave the series tied at 2-2, with everything to play for in Vizag on Saturday. That is, if cyclone Kyant is kind enough to allow play. Dhoni is right. Suresh Raina, Yuvraj Singh, Mohd Kaif and Dhoni himself developed those skills to finish a game over a course of 15-20 ODIs and repeatedly being put in such situations.

In the 1990s, invariably it was Ajay Jadeja and Robin Singh who performed that role.

So, what skills are required for batting at that number? Ability to read the situation, the wicket and the calmness to not go too early for the big shot and perish in the process.

Manish Pandey and Kedar Jadhav have been assigned that role now and neither of them have played long enough in those positions to succeed consistently. They are also by-products of the IPL era where they are required to play the big shots. Pandey perished trying to do that on Wednesday while Jadhav perished attempting a cute stroke at the Kotla. Ditto for Hardik Pandya. What the finishers of the past, named above, benefitted from was a crack opening pair in either Sachin Tendulkar and Sourav Ganguly or Ganguly and Sehwag, or Sehwag and Tendulkar, who invariably got the team off to sublime starts. Pandey and Jadhav have not enjoyed that luxury.

They have also been a bit crippled by the fact that the skipper's hitting skills and the ability to rotate strike on difficult pitches have been on the wane over the last 18 months.

In Mohali, when he scored 80, Dhoni had good allies in the form of a true pitch and a red-hot Virat Kohli. Kohli's skill to find the gaps consistently enabled Dhoni to create his own tempo and rhythm and play a key role in the win. In Ranchi, on a tired pitch, and with Kohli gone and the game still in balance, he had to make all the play on his own.

As his 11 off 31 balls illustrated, he wasn't equipped to do it. Ajinkya Rahane batted well for his 57, but he is not the batsman that can take you home. Not yet anyway. He has hardly batted beyond the 35th over, barring the odd knock. While Dhoni will go down in history as one of India's and the game's greatest ever middle-order players, he is right now in the need of support when it comes to injecting momentum in chases. At 30 or 32, one could hope for stirring solos from him. Without Suresh Raina or Yuvraj Singh and without a solid and in-form top-order, those solos won't happen.

It was proved in Sydney where Dhoni fed off Pandey (104* off 81 balls) to score 34 off 42 balls as India chased down 331. In Kanpur last year, against South Africa, Rohit Sharma slammed a sublime 150 and till he was there Dhoni did not feel troubled. But the moment Rohit departed with India needing 34 from 23 balls, Dhoni struggled.

ALL SET FOR DECIDER: India and New Zealand have been tied 2-2 twice in the past in five-match series. In 1995, India managed to win the final ODI at the Brabourne Stadium to clinch the series under Mohammad Azharuddin. In 1999, Tendulkar led India to a series win in the fifth ODI at the Kotla.

The city of Pune will stage its first test when the home side plays Australia in the opener of the four-match series starting February.

The Pune test starts February 23 before Australia travel to Bengaluru for the second match from March 4.

Two more venues -- Ranchi and Dharamshala -- will also host their first tests with the third and fourth matches of the Border-Gavaskar series.

The scheduling will force some Australia players, who play all three formats, to miss a three-match Twenty20 international series against Sri Lanka at home, with the first test in India starting a day after the final game against Sri Lanka.

With Australia suffering a 3-0 thrashing in their recent test series in Sri Lanka, there have been talks about the prospect of picking specialist players for different conditions.

Australia captain Steve Smith is not averse to the idea and said most current teams in the world play well only at home.

"You want guys improving and getting better in those kinds of conditions (away from home)," Smith told the Cricket Australia website.

"But I think you need to have the team that's most suited to those conditions as well.

"You pick different teams from T20s to one-dayers to tests, so why not sometime in the future pick teams for certain conditions?

"That could be a possibility somewhere down the track."
Schedule:

1st test - Feb. 23-27 - Pune
2nd test - March 04-08 - Bengaluru
3rd test - March 16-20 - Ranchi
4th test - March 25-29 - Dharamshala
