Vivek Sharma, Seoul : On June 25th, 2023, a program was organized at the Korean War Memorial, which was covered by Indian journalists. The event brought together many Korean people and Korean war veterans to honor the memory of those who lost their lives in the North-South Korea war.

The North-South Korea war began in the early hours of June 23rd, 1950, when North Korea launched an attack on South Korea while its people were asleep. This brutal conflict lasted until 1953, claiming the lives of over 150,000 South Korean soldiers and thousands of U.S. Army soldiers. To commemorate this significant day, Korean citizens gathered, holding the flags of South Korea and the United States, paying homage to the fallen martyrs.

During the North-South Korea war, India, in its early years of independence and limited resources, extended its support to South Korea. India sent a paramedical team to aid the wounded soldiers of South Korea, demonstrating their solidarity and compassion. The Korean veterans acknowledge and deeply respect India's contribution to their nation's cause, fostering a lasting bond between the two countries.

A total of 21 countries provided assistance to South Korea during the war. Sixteen countries deployed their armies to South Korea, while five countries, including India, dispatched paramedical teams to assist the injured soldiers. At the Korean War Memorial, flags from all 21 nations, including the Indian flag, proudly wave, symbolizing the collective efforts and international cooperation that played a crucial role in supporting South Korea during its time of need.

The program held at the Korean War Memorial serves as a poignant reminder of the sacrifices made and the heroism displayed by soldiers and civilians alike during the North-South Korea war. It stands as a testament to the enduring friendship between South Korea, India, and the other nations that rallied to support them. Through such gatherings, the memory of the fallen heroes lives on, their bravery and sacrifice forever etched in the hearts and minds of those who attend.

As the world moves forward, events like these honor the past and remind us of the importance of peace, unity, and cooperation among nations. The Korean War Memorial stands as a solemn monument, paying tribute to the lives lost and the collective resolve to ensure that such conflicts remain a thing of the past.

New Delhi: A woman, accused of organising a honey-trap and blackmailing BJP MP K C Patel, has been denied bail by a special court which said she had adopted "ingenious modus operandi" to trap public personalities and extort money.

The court also dismissed the bail plea of businessman Ajay Kumar alias Ajay Pal Chauhan, who along with the 40- year-old woman, is lodged in judicial custody saying they were "partners in crime".

Special Judge Hemani Malhotra said the material prima facie suggested that the woman adopted this "ingenious modus operandi to trap public personalities by accusing them of rape/molestation and then extort money from them".

"This kind of act is not only diabolical but also brings loss of reputation and stigma to the persons accused of rape/molestation. Such persons are repeatedly shunned by their own families and public at large, irrespective of the ultimate result.

"It is not a simple case of extortion in which case, the victim suffers pecuniary loss. The present case is an instance where the victims suffer loss of honour and fall in the eyes of society," the court observed.

According to the prosecution, the woman had allegedly filmed obscene videos of the Gujarat's Valsad MP after drugging him and threatened to make them public if she was not paid Rs seven crore. Chauhan had allegedly helped the woman in executing the offence.

The court considered the gravity of offence and dismissed the bail pleas, saying they did not deserve any leniency.

"On the basis of the admitted fact that accused Ajay Kumar alias Ajay Pal had made payment for installing hidden cameras in the flat of accused woman and the call detail records, it prima facie appears that both the accused persons were in conspiracy with each other and were partners in crime," the court said.

It was also informed by the investigating officer that a supplementary charge sheet would be filed in the case as the probe is on.

"In view thereof, matter be renotified for filing of supplementary charge sheet, consideration of charge sheet and for scrutiny of documents on September 16," the court said.

The woman had sought bail on the ground that she was a victim and had been falsely implicated by the complainant to circumvent legal action for the alleged offence of rape against him.

Chauhan's counsel argued that there was no material on record to suggest that he was in conspiracy with the woman in commission of the offence relating to taking gratification by corrupt means by influencing public servants.

Special Public Prosecutor Atul Shrivastava opposed their bail pleas saying that to extort money, the woman used to ensnare politicians and people in public life. It also noted that she had earlier too lodged several FIRs in which she had either turned hostile or resiled from her statements.

The prosecutor opposed Chauhan's bail plea saying it was this accused who had made the payment for installation of hidden cameras in the flat of the accused woman which established the conspiracy between them.

Police had earlier filed a charge sheet against the woman, Chauhan and Mitrapal for alleged offences of extortion, criminal conspiracy, taking gratification by corrupt or illegal means to influence a public servant and other charges under the IPC and the Prevention of Corruption Act.

While the woman and Chauhan are in judicial custody, Mitrapal has not yet been arrested.

The woman was arrested on May 2 by Delhi Police from her Ghaziabad residence. Chauhan was arrested on June 9 from Connaught Place here on the basis of a tip-off received by the police.
A schoolgirl in Hyderabad in glittering red poses with an elderly man in disturbing wedding photographs that were handed over to the police yesterday. The bride is 16 and the groom - a 65-year-old sheikh from Oman.

The girl's parents went to the police yesterday alleging that she was married off three months ago for Rs. 5 lakh, which was paid to an aunt, and taken to Oman without their consent.

"If you don't save me and take me from here, I will die..." the girl has reportedly said in phone messages to her parents from Muscat.

The teen's mother, pleading for help to bring her back, has accused her sister-in-law and her husband of facilitating the illegal marriage for money.

In the photographs she has given the police as proof, the Class 8 student appears to be in her wedding attire with an elderly, grey-bearded man in a jacket. In another photo, the man is in white and the girl is in black. They were married in a hotel by a Qazi, the woman says.

The man allegedly returned to Muscat after the wedding and later sent a visa for his child bride.

The woman says her daughter cried every time she spoke to her and wanted to return to Hyderabad.

"I spoke directly with the Omani national who married my daughter. He is saying that he paid Rs. 5 lakhs to Sikander (brother-in-law) and his wife and purchased my daughter and wants that money back, then only he will send back my daughter," the woman said in her complaint.

Such marriages are tragically common in Hyderabad, which draws elderly men looking for young brides from poor families. Quick weddings are arranged for amounts that can go up to lakhs of rupees.

New Delhi: The National Investigation agency on Wednesday told the Supreme Court that ‘love jihad’ is for real. Top sources within the agency told CNN-News18 that their investigations into the Popular Front of India in the last few years was the basis of this claim.

NIA submitted a 22-page report to the Supreme Court in which references were made to PFI cases in Kerala.

The apex court had asked the NIA for a report on ‘love jihad’ after one Shafin Jahan challenged the annulment of his marriage to a Hindu woman by the Kerala High Court last December.

Jahan is reportedly a member of Social Democratic Party of India (SDPI), the political wing of PFI. NIA’s chargesheet in the murder case of RSS worker Rudresh stated that PFI and its affiliated political organisation SDPI had conspired to attack and kill Rudresh to strike terror among a section of people and also to establish an Islamic caliphate. Rudresh was killed in October 2016 in Bengaluru.

Sources said NIA’s report to the Supreme Court also made a mention of the Athira-Ayesha conversion case. The Kasargod girl had allegedly converted to Islam against the wishes of her parents and NIA had done a preliminary enquiry in the matter.

A report submitted by the NIA to the Kerala High Court in 2016 said that a criminal case for forced conversion was filed in the case.

NIA has been investigating PFI in at least three cases - the professor arms chopping case of 2015, the Kannur arms training camp case of 2013 and murder of the RSS activist.

Sources say investigators noticed a pattern of ‘love jihad' or forced religious conversion during these investigations. Kerala Police has also handed over nearly 2,500 pages of documents in support of its claim that forced conversion is part of a greater conspiracy in Kerala.

In the case of the Kerala woman, the Supreme Court made it clear that it will speak to the 25-year-old Hindu woman before deciding validity of her marriage to Jahan after her conversion to Islam.

A bench led by Chief Justice of India J S Khehar asked the NIA to investigate under guidance of its former judge R V Raveendran after the lawyers for the Muslim man, whose marriage was annulled by the Kerala High Court, gave their consent to the probe.
Pawan Pandit, Chairman Bhartiya Gau Raksha Dal
Rediff.com's Syed Firdaus Ashraf spoke to Pawan Pandit, chairman, Bharatiya Gau Raksha Dal, about the Alwar incident, gau rakshaks and the BJP's failure to protect cows.
The Supreme Court has issued a notice to the Centre and five state governments on gau rakshaks. How would you react?
First, we will have to see the grounds on which the Supreme Court has sent this notice.
Second, is to see how the Congress party will gain political mileage from this.
The gau rakshak movement is not new -- it is a 400-year-old movement.
We raised the issue of cow slaughter in India, but today the goal post has moved.
Today, questions are being raised on gau rakshaks. The Una incident was made out to be an anti-Dalit issue by them (the Congress party), while the Dadri issue was made out to be an anti-Muslim issue.
People have died and gau rakshaks are responsible.
I will give you 50 examples in the last five years where gau rakshaks have died because of cow smugglers.
They shot gau rakshaks and killed them, but there are no debates in India when that happens.
The gau rakshak movement is not related to Hindus.
The Arya Samaj initiated gau raksha. Namdhari Sikhs do it to simply protect cows.
Even the Mughal emperor Babur spoke about cow protection though he was anti-Hindu.
There is a history of cow protection in India and therefore cow smuggling and cow slaughter have to be stopped.
In Alwar, the man who was killed, Pehlu Khan, was transporting cows, but he was killed.
Do you have the inquiry report? The home minister of Rajasthan (Gulab Chand Kataria) said these people were cattle smugglers.
More importantly, transporting cows in Rajasthan is not allowed without a permit from the district magistrate.
I am not defending the killing of Pehlu Khan. Such incidents must not take place, but you cannot blame gau rakshaks.
The issue here is about gau hatya (cow slaughter), not gau rakshaks.
  • 'Not my Hinduism' should be our slogan
The police can stop cow smuggling. Why do you take the law in your hands?
Take the example of Una.
It was showcased as gau rakshaks versus Dalits. Till this day, no one has proved that the accused belonged to a gau rakshak organisation.
So how does one know who is a gau rakshak and who is not?
Our organisation is registered like any non-governmental organisation. It is a national body.
We make members sign a declaration on an affidavit that they will not commit any illegal activities.
We also tell them that wherever cow smuggling is taking place they should take the help of the police.
For instance, a woman's purse is stolen in a market. The mob runs after the thief and beats him. The mob beats the thief without any weapons. Sometimes the thief dies because of the beating.
So let me clarify, gau rakshaks do not carry weapons with them, but cow smugglers do. But intellectuals do not want to get into these details.
In Alwar, a man called Arjun, the driver of the vehicle with Pehlu Khan's cattle, was told to leave, but Khan and the others were beaten up because they were Muslim. Is this not communal?
That's what the news is made out to be because politics is involved.
If that's the angle of a news report, the gau hatya issue will die and gau taskar (cow smugglers) will become heroes.
Except for West Bengal, Kerala, Goa and the north-east, cow slaughter is not allowed in most states.
There is a law in most states that bans cow slaughter, yet it happens. How?
Pehlu Khan was transporting cows for milk.
There were more than 20 cows in the Alwar case. There were three vehicles.
If you are transporting these many cows, then you must know the law that is applicable in Rajasthan.
You have to take a permit from the district magistrate. Pehlu Khan did not have the permit.
But you can call the police. Why assault and kill?
Today, there is a unified voice from every corner of India that wants cow slaughter banned. Why are some people not listening to this voice? Why is the media not representing the voice of the people?
The media portrays these gau rakshaks as terrorists.
Why is a doctor becoming a gau rakshak?
Why is a software engineer becoming a gau rakshak?
They are risking their lives for this cause.
They inform the police regularly and we have documented evidence to show that we follow rules and regulations.
Isn't human life more important than a cow's life?
The life of a cow is more precious than the life of a human being. This is according to Indian culture.
Cows help reduce global warming -- it's the only animal which delivers (exhales) oxygen.
Is there any scientific proof for what you are saying?
You prove it. This has been proved. Why has the USA patented cow urine?
Name any animal in world whose poop is useful. Only cow dung can be used.
You can use it to make gas, generate electricity, even build homes.
Our saints have said all this centuries ago. They have said cow slaughter is the biggest sin on Earth.
I also challenge you (to disprove) that you can make mosquito repellent with cow urine.
But your organisation is feeding on fear and rumours. Like in Jaipur, a restaurant was shut down on misinformation that it was serving beef. How long can this go on?
First, there has to be a centralised law against cow slaughter.
Second, why doesn't the government which is in power, say that it is a government for cows, mandir and the Ganga?
Why don't they declare the cow as a national animal?
Once you do that, cow smuggling will stop automatically.
But gau rakshaks are creating law and order problems.
The government has to speak in favour of the cow protection movement, which will not work if you represent cow smugglers.
So why is the controversy happening? It is because cow smuggling is still going on.
The failure of law and order is the responsibility of the government, not ours.
There is a BJP government in Rajasthan and yet cow smuggling is happening in the state. So are you saying the BJP has failed to protect cows?
Yes, the BJP has failed to protect cows.
I am not defending the BJP. The BJP has never been as powerful as it is now. They have a majority in the Lok Sabha and (very soon) in the Rajya Sabha too.
The country's sentiment too is with them. They are winning election after election, be it state or municipal.
Now they must enact a centralised law to protect cows.
Cows are eating plastic and need to be protected.
The government must help people who run cow shelters. They must give subsidies to set up business units using cow dung, cow urine and milk.
The BJP has always claimed that they are for the cow, the mandir and the Ganga.
Let them complete their first task -- the cow.
Why do you feel that the BJP has done nothing for cows?
They have done nothing for the cow.
They are changing names of every city and town. They have changed the name of Gurgaon to Gurugram. I have to change my stationery and it adds to my cost.
So there is no economic benefit for me from the name change, in fact it is a loss.
They must declare the cow as a national animal. Cow smuggling is happening because in many states cow slaughter is still not banned.
Reserve Bank of India Governor Urjit Patel allegedly received a threat mail asking him to quit the job from a 37-year-old man, who has been arrested from Nagpur, police said on Sunday.
received the email on February 23 in which the sender threatened to harm Patel and his family if he did not quit, a police official said.

Patel forwarded the email to a senior RBI officer, who in turn approached the cyber cell of Mumbai police and lodged a complaint.

During the investigation, police found that the email was sent from a cyber cafe in Nagpur.

A team from the Mumbai police's cyber cell then went to Nagpur and arrested the accused, identified as Vaibhav Baddalwar, on Friday.

"We have arrested the accused from Nagpur in connection with the threat mail to the RBI Governor," Deputy Commissioner of Police, cyber cell, Akhilesh Singh said.

An offence was registered by police under Indian Penal Code section 506(2) (criminal intimidation) in the case.

Police claimed that the accused admitted to having sent the mail.

Baddalwar was later produced in a Nagpur court which remanded him in police custody till March 6.

The accused did his post-graduation abroad and is currently jobless. It is suspected that he sent the mail out of frustration, Singh said adding that an investigation into the matter is on.

The RBI spokesperson did not offer any comments in the matter.

Giving thrust to women’s safety, the 2017-18 Kerala budget today set apart Rs 68 crore for various schemes to prevent atrocities against them, besides proposing a public register of sexual offenders. While announcing the measures in the budget presented in the Assembly, Kerala Finance Minister T M Thomas Issac said, “Atrocities against women are a disgrace to the Malayalee community.”

Women’s safety came under scanner yet again when a Malayalam actress was harassed for two hours inside her car after the accused forced their way into the vehicle in Kochi recently. Issac said Rs 68 crore has been provided for different schemes to prevent atrocities against women and focus on their rehabilitation. This includes Rs 12 crore for ‘Pink Control Room’ and self-defence training and Rs 34 crore for awareness campaigns.

Besides, Rs 19.5 crore will be allocated for shelter homes, short stay homes and ‘one-stop crisis centre’ and Rs three crore for two SOS model homes. A women’s police battalion, women police stations at taluk-level, panchayat-level visits of women police officers, public register for sexual offenders are the other pro-women initiatives in the budget.

On February 23, Governor Justice (Retd) P Sathasivam had said the Kerala government will launch a registry of sex offenders, the first of its kind in the country. It will contain all identification details of sex offenders and would be kept in public domain.

The state finance minister on Friday said Rs 5 crore has been earmarked for a special fund for protection and speedy rehabilitation of victims. A special department for women will be formed in the financial year 2017-18. The social welfare schemes for women, presently under the Social Justice Department, will be shifted to this new department. He said gender budgeting is being reinstated and the State Planning Board has prepared a document under which allocations for women’s development have been divided into two parts.

Part A includes 64 schemes exclusively for women beneficiaries with an allocation of Rs 1,060.50 crore. This amount will come to 5.23 per cent of the total state plan outlay, excluding the plan of local bodies, he said.

Part B includes general development schemes in which a special component for women or beneficiary numbers of women is distinguishable. “This will help in formulating more comprehensive document in the future,” he said. The minister said in the next year’s budget, gender audit report will also be placed in the House along with the gender budget statement.

The total outlay involved in 104 schemes is Rs 13,400 crore. Of this, Rs 1,266 crore is allocated exclusively for women. Thus at least 11.5 per cent of the total plan outlay has been set apart for women development.
Chennai: President Pranab Mukherjee said on Friday a strong deterrent is needed against those who want to adversely affect India's progress and security in view of the ever changing geo-political situation in the region.

He also honoured a helicopter unit for its meritorious works, including its stellar role in confining terrorists to a restricted area during the last year's terror attack on Pathankot Air Force Station."India is a responsible and emerging power in a multipolar, multilateral world. The ever changing socio-economic and geo-political scenario in our region of influence demands a strong deterrent against those with nefarious designs to affect the progress, prosperity and security of our nation," Mukherjee said.

Apart from providing deterrence against inimical entities, both external and internal, the armed forces have been at the forefront of providing succour to the citizens during natural calamities, he said.

"The operations by the Indian Air Force during floods in Uttarakhand, Kashmir Valley and Tamil Nadu deserve a special mention and will always be remembered by the entire nation.

"The relentless and selfless operations showcase the fortitude and determination of its gallant air warriors," Mukherjee said.

He was speaking after awarding the President's 'Standard' to 125 Helicopter Squadron and 'Colours' to Mechanical Training Institute at the Tambaram air base, one of the oldest establishments of the Indian Air Force, near Chennai.

The awards of Standard and Colours are given to a unit for its meritorious service.

The 125 Helicopter Squadron (Gladiators) since its formation in November 1983 has enhanced its operational capability over the years and earned accolades for its valour
and strike capabilities when deployed internally as well as abroad.

When deployed under the United Nations flag in Sierra Leone, the Gladiators were instrumental in securing the release of 232 captured Indian Army personnel. In January 2016, the Squadron played a stellar role in confining the terrorists to a restricted area during the Pathankot terror attack, thereby reducing casualties, the President said.

The Mechanical Training Institute at Air Force Station Tambaram is the oldest technical training institute of the force.

Raised in 1935, the institute has undergone changes in locations as well as in nomenclature over the years and was rechristened as Mechanical Training Institute in 1980.

The unit imparts fundamental technical training in aircraft maintenance and servicing to the young recruits in mechanical aviation trades.

The tradesmen are the backbone of the maintenance arm of the IAF, ensuring its operational capability and effectiveness.
New Delhi: CPI-M leader Sitaram Yechury on Tuesday flayed the Modi government and the Sangh Parivar over the death and rape threats to Delhi University student Gurmehar Kaur for taking on the ABVP.Ministers are supposed to work under the constitutional oath to ensure the rule of law. The current lot, instead, jumps to the support of those who threaten, abuse and bully a 20-year-old lady," Yechury said on his Facebook page.

"Sangh Parivar has no strength of conviction in its reasoning, the threat of violence is its only weapon against ideas.

"It is about an individual's freedom, guaranteed under our Constitution to each one of us.

"They want to impose all their regressive ideas on what you wear, eat, see, do, or the way you live," added the Communist Party of India-Marxist General Secretary.

Besides facing criticism from some union ministers including Minister of State for Home Kiren Rijiju, Kaur got death and rape threats after she took on the Akhil Bharatiya Vidhyarthi Parishad (ABVP).

Daughter of an army officer who died in the Kargil war, Kaur spoke against the ABVP after its activists were blamed for the attacks on students, teachers and journalists in the campus.

Yechury also trashed Rijiju after the minister alleged that Leftists celebrate whenever Indian soldiers die.

"Who celebrated after (Mahatma) Gandhi was killed!" Yechury tweeted. He quoted then Home Minsiter Sardar Vallabhbhai Patel as telling then RSS chief MS Golwalkar: "RSS men expressed joy and distributed sweets after Gandhiji's death."

NEW DELHI: The government has formed an inter-ministerial committee to look into concerns expressed by NRIs, tourists from abroad and foreign missions over demonetisation, the ministry of external affairs said on Thursday.

While foreign missions had sought MEA's intervention to facilitate smooth collection of consular and visa fee and to allow them access to more funds, NRIs, money exchange associations, and foreign tourists abroad too have expressed concern about the difficulties being faced by them.

"The department of economic affairs has now formed an inter-ministerial committee headed at the level of an additional secretary. A senior joint secretary from the ministry of external affairs is also a member of that committee and we await their guidance, their advice and their recommendation which can then be shared with those various categories who have approached us," said MEA spokesperson Vikas Swarup.

"Some (foreign missions here) have wanted to know if they could collect consular and visa fees in old notes. If so collected, they have sought to know how will those be exchanged," said Swarup.

The second set of issues, he said, was related to NRIs having cash, or those holding Indian currency abroad. "If somebody has money abroad, and is not travelling to India immediately, what happens? How does he get new notes for those old notes?"

"The third set of issues is by the money changer associations abroad. This is quite interesting because we don't have full convertibility...So, they have asked us the same question that what they would do with the stacks they have. How do they convert those?," the spokesperson added.

According to the ministry, foreign visitors and tourists, particularly those coming for medical tourism, had asked MEA about some very specific requirements which needed to be looked into.

NEW DELHI: Minutes after he announced the demonetisationof high-value currency, the Prime Minister wrote to all chief ministers explaining the rationale behind the move and urging them to "join hands with the Centre in fighting evils that have plagued our country and help in setting up a new course towards integrity".

In his letter, Narendra Modi also detailed the guidelines to the states to ensure proper working of banks, security to the central bank and requested their special monitoring of inconvenience caused at crematoria and burial grounds, hospitals and milk stores.

The demonetisation of large denomination currency notes was informed to states in quite a dramatic way. Resident commissioners of states in the capital were asked to keep their offices open till late on November 8, the day the announcement was made, to receive a letter from the PM to be sent immediately to their CMs.

The instructions given to the states in a written note signed by the PM outlined providing security for the RBI in the movement of new currency notes and ensuring adequate security at banks and post offices during the deposit of the demonetised currency.

The letter asked the CMs to ensure state buses and crematoria continued to accept Rs 500 and Rs 1000 notes till the midnight of November 11, and ensure milk booths and consumer cooperative super markets accepted these notes.

Stating that the role of the state governments in implementing the programme was "most crucial", the PM said in his letter: "I am writing to request the full cooperation of your government in implementing this difficult, but necessary, measure. I request you to take all measures that may be appropriate for minimising hardship and inconvenience to the public." Describing the move as a measure taken as part of "our relentless fight against the evils of corruption, black money, counterfeiting and terrorism," Modi said, "I know you will welcome this and I will have your full support in this effort".

NEW DELHI: The government on Tuesday banned Islamic Research Foundation(IRF), the NGO of controversial Islamic preacher Zakir Naik, as an 'unlawful organisation' for five years with immediate effect.

The ban has been enforced under the Unlawful Activities (Prevention) Act (UAPA) and approved at a meeting of the Union Cabinet.

TOI had earlier reported that the government intended to ban IRF citing Naik's "objectionable and subversive" speeches, the criminal cases filed against him and other members of IRF in Mumbai and Sindhudurg in Maharashtra and Kerala, as well as his "dubious" links with Peace TV that allegedly features "communal" and "pro-jihad" content as grounds for such a ban.

An 'unlawful' association is different from a 'terrorist' organisation listed under UAPA. The law defines 'unlawful association' as any organisation "which has for its object any activity that is punishable under Section 153A or 153B of IPC" - provisions dealing with threat to social and communal harmony.

Declaration of IRF as 'unlawful' under Section 3 of the UAPA will force closure of its offices and interests across the country.

According to sources in the home ministry, there was a solid case for proscribing IRF based on inputs and material shared by the Maharashtra government and the central intelligence agencies.

There are FIRs against Naik and other IRF members under Section 153A and 153B of IPC in 2 police stations of Mumbai, 1 in Kerala and two in Sindhudurg. There are several of Naik's speeches compiled by Intelligence Bureau (IB) including where he extolls Osama bin Laden, claiming that 80% of Indians had not been Hindus as Muslims could have converted them "if we wanted" by sword, justifies suicide bombings, claims Golden Temple may not be sacred as Mecca and makes objectionable comments against Hindu gods. Most of these speeches form the content on Peace TV, a part of which was put together by Mumbai-based Harmony Media Pvt Ltd that once had Naik and his wife as directors. Large money transfers have been detected from UK-based charity IRF International, run by Naik to Harmony Media.

As per the Cabinet note proposing action against IRF, which incorporated legal opinion favouring a ban on the NGO for disturbing communal harmony and attempting forced conversions, Zakir Naik has been promoting enmity between religious groups and inspiring Muslim youth in India and abroad to commit terrorist acts.

"Such divisive ideology is against India's pluralistic and secular social fabric and it may be viewed as causing disaffection against India and thereby making it an unlawful activity," states the draft Cabinet note accessed earlier by TOI. "If urgent steps are not taken (to ban IRF), there is every possibility of more youth being motivated and radicalised to commit terrorist acts," it warns.

The NIA is also examining the option of slapping terror charges against Naik, based on testimonies of around 50 terror accused and convicts lodged in various jails, stating that they were motivated by his speeches to take up jihad.

Naik came under the scanner of the security agencies after Bangladeshi newspaper 'Daily Star' reported that one of the perpetrators of the July 1 terror attack in Dhaka, Rohan Imtiaz, ran propaganda on Facebook last year quoting Naik.

The Islamic orator is banned in the UK and Canada for his hate speech aimed against other religions. He is among 16 banned Islamic scholars in Malaysia.

He had been popular in Bangladesh through his Peace TV, although his preachings often demean other religions and even other Muslim sects. The Mumbai-based preacher has not returned to India ever since the controversy erupted.

According to police, Latika, Dikshit's daughter, had also accused her estranged husband of subjecting her to violence.
Former Delhi Chief Minister Sheila Dikshit’s son-in-law was on Tuesday sent to two-day police custody by a city court in a case of theft and misappropriating his wife’s property. Syed Mohammad Imran, who was arrested from Bangalore and brought here on transit remand, was produced before Metropolitan Magistrate Pankaj Sharma who remanded him to police custody till November 17.

Delhi Police sought two days custody of Imran saying they have to recover the articles which he had allegedly stolen. Advocates P Banerjee and Neeraj Kumar, appearing for Imran, opposed the police plea saying the probe agency has violated the provisions of CrPC and he should be released from custody. The counsel argued that the arrest of accused was not mandatory in this case and the police should have given notice to him to appear before the officer.

According to police, Latika, Dikshit’s daughter, had also accused her estranged husband of subjecting her to violence. Latika and Imran had got married in 1996 but were living separately for the last 10 months. In her complaint filed in June, Latika had alleged that Imran’s attitude had changed towards her and had become aggressive and rude towards her after her mother lost in the Delhi Assembly elections.

Latika had alleged that Imran took away papers of a piece of land owned by her in Nainital, despite having been told not to do so in May. According to police, she also alleged that some of the belongings, kept at her Hailey Road house in central Delhi, had gone missing and whenever she asked, Imran was evasive. She also alleged that he took away jewellery and other expensive items from there.

Latika also accused one of her female relatives of being “in connivance” with Imran, they said. A case was registered against Imran under Sections 403 (dishonest misappropriation of property), 120 B (Criminal conspiracy), 201 (destruction of evidence)and 420 (cheating) of the IPC and under 66 of the IT Act.

After the finance ministry raised the limit for daily withdrawals to Rs 2,500, Das said recalibrated ATMs will be able to dispense new Rs 500 and Rs 2000 notes.

He added that a special task force has been setup to expedite the entire process of recalibrating ATMs. The task force will be chaired by the RBI Deputy Governor and it will have representatives of financial services, banks, and Ministry of Home Affairs as its members. “This task force has been instructed to work out a strategy to expedite whole process of recalibration of the ATMs,” Das added.

Prime Minister Narendra Modi said on Sunday his government will carry on with the fight against black money, targetting those who held benami properties in the country.

He was speaking about the demonetisation of high-denomination banknotes at a speech at a function organised by the state government.

    Here are the highlights:

    1. I also feel the pain. These steps taken were in not a display of arrogance
    2. Why do we have to put the future of our youth at stake? Those who want to do politics are free to do so
    3. Why do we have to put the future of our youth at stake? Those who want to do politics are free to do so
    4. Just give me time till December 30 over this issue (demonetisation). If you have any qualms after December 30, the people of this country can punish me.
    5. Whatever I had, my family, my home, I left it behind for the nation, says PM Modi as he tears up
    6. You’ll be shocked to know that many MPs asked me not to make PAN mandatory for any purchase of jewellery
    7. If any money that was looted in India and has left Indian shores, it is our duty to find out about it
    8. We are going to target those who have benami properties
    9. If you asked me to defeat the menace of black money, how can I not do it?
    10. The people have chosen a government and they expect so much from it. In 2014, so many people voted to free the nation from corruption
    11. This is important step towards eradicating corruption and black money, but some people are lost in their own world

UNITED NATIONS: India has strongly criticized the Security Council for taking months to consider sanctioning leaders of groups it has itself designated as terror entities, in an obvious reference to the "technical hold" on India's bid to get JeM chief Masood Azhar banned by the UN.

Asserting that the Security Council is stuck in its own "time warp and politics", India's Permanent Representative to the UN ambassador Syed Akbaruddin on Sunday slammed the Council's inability to sanction the leaders of terrorist organisations.

"While our collective conscience is ravaged everyday by terrorists in some region or another, the Security Council gives itself 9 months to consider whether to sanction leaders of organisations it has itself designated as terrorist entities," Akbaruddin said at a session on equitable representation and increase in the membership of the Security Council here.

Earlier this year, China had extended the "technical hold" on India's move to get Azhar designated as a terrorist by the UN. The six-month validity of the technical hold lapsed in late September and China sought another three-month extension on India's bid.

He lamented that the snail-paced and "never-ending carousel of discussions" on United Nations Security Council (UNSC) reforms, saying "it is time to break the impasse" to urgently reform the body that is "unresponsive" to the current global situation.

The inability to respond to humanitarian situations, terrorist threats and peacekeeping vulnerabilities during this year itself are part of the price that is being paid for the international community's lack of progress on the critical matter, he noted.

NEW DELHI: Files related to Prime Minister Narendra Modi's foreign travel have been called for by the Chief Information Commission, which wants to know if details of how much was spent and how bills are cleared can be made public.

PM Modi has travelled to over 40 countries since he took office in May 2014. But there have been delays in clearing flight charter bills, for which national carrier Air India is paying heavily, says Right to Information campaigner Lokesh Batra.

The retired Air Commodore had used RTI to ask for details of the foreign travels of PM Modi and his predecessor Manmohan Singh.

"Air India is in deep financial crisis and I wanted to know why it takes so long to clear bills to the national carrier under different regimes," Air Commodore Batra told NDTV.

The information commission will decide whether these records can be disclosed.

The Prime Minister's Office and the External Affairs Ministry had refused to share the details, flagging security concerns.

PMO officials had informed the Chief Information Commissioner that security details would be compromised if the files were shown to the RTI activist. Air Commodore Batra, however, told the information body that he only wants to study the reason for delays in clearing bills to Air India.

The Information Commission has asked the Prime Minister's Office to produce the information by November 18.

Earlier this year, the PM's official website put up details of his visits and the cost of chartering flights. For many of the tours, there are gaps as bills are described as "under process" or "not received".

Spending for the Prime Minister's foreign trips is listed under "Cabinet Ministers - Maintenance of PM's aircraft - other charges" in the Budget. For his domestic visits, the expenses are billed to the Defence Ministry.
