Vivek Sharma, 04th October 2020, New Delhi: First Lady of the Republic of Korea, KIM Jung-sook participated in a webinar themed “Weaving Relations: Textile Tradition” organized by The Indian Council for Cultural Relations (ICCR) on the 3rd October (Saturday), 2020.



This was a closing program for the two-year-long celebration (October 2018 to October 2020) of the 150th birth of Mahatma Gandhi and was a celebration of Mahatma Gandhi’s struggle against British colonial rule through the locally made products and widespread use of khadi, a traditional textile and his yearning for world peace. The webinar was streamed live through the ICCR YouTube channel.

H.E. KIM Jung-sook conveyed her “deepest condolences and heartfelt sympathies to all those affected by COVID-19” and recollected the special meaning behind a replica charkha gifted by Prime Minister Modi at the Gandhi Smriti during President MOON Jae-in’s visit to India in 2018. She also recalled Gandhi’s thoughts behind the symbolic khadi and as an avid believer in Gandhian ideas befittingly wore a dress made of Banarasi khadi, while delivering the opening message.

She emphasized that “In the midst of the global pandemic, we have reconfirmed our strong bilateral ties” and conveyed her “hope that Korea and India will become the lamp that contributes to the peace and prosperity not just in Asia but around the world”.

President MOON Jae-in and First Lady KIM Jung-sook wholeheartedly participated in the Gandhi 150th anniversary, in solidarity with Gandhi’s life and philosophy and in light of the shared friendship with Prime Minister Narendra Modi and in keeping with the special strategic partnership between the ROK and India.

Her Excellency, Kim Jung-sook celebrated Gandhi’s spirit of non-violence and his sacrifice by participating in this webinar which presented an opportunity for further consolidating relations with India, a key partner in Korea’s New Southern Policy. This webinar also served to convey a message of hope and solidarity to the international community in the face of the Covid 19 and unprecedented financial difficulty.

First Lady Kim also made a solo trip to India at the invitation of Prime Minister Modi in November 2018 as the Chief Guest during Diwali and participated in the opening and lighting ceremony. She also participated in the groundbreaking ceremony of the Queen Huh Memorial Park.

Artists, master artisans, weavers, technicians from countries such as India, Indonesia, Vietnam, Bangladesh, Tajikistan, Bhutan, Bahrain, Thailand, Afghanistan, Belarus and Sri Lanka participated in this webinar and discussed weaving as a medium that represents Gandhi’s philosophies.
